Hilifesurf.co.uk Sponsored Surf Comp

The lonely judging tower!

Friday 24th September saw the 5th Outdoor Adventure surf festival held at Widemouth bay and hilifesurf.co.uk got involved with both the sponsoring of the event and the judging.  Tricky conditions of 4-6ft surf and a strong northerly wind were found by the 50 students from 5 local schools including Budehaven, Saltash, Bodmin, Camelford and Wadebridge when they turned up to register.  The competiton was aimed both at elite surfers and beginners alike with both a normal comp format running as well as a tag team comp.

The strong wind and large surf did not trouble the surfers too much and Saltash walked away with the top spot in the intermediates section with bags full of prizes.

September Swells

So swells come and swells go but the last one was a particularily good one, hanging round for a almost a week it was one of those swells that spots all up and down the coast lit up.  Perfect size for many beaches and reefs it was an ideal time to surf a few different boards,  by Saturday morning many surfers had aching bodies so crowds were well spread out  and there was time to catch up with a few people in the car park and enjoy the sun.

As we sit in this wintery spell with a howling North Westerly the next one seems a long way off!

Leopallooza

We’ve been pretty hectic here at hilifesurf lately, but thankfully a couple of weeks ago we managed to squeeze in some much-needed chill out time at the annual Leopallooza festival.

Held not far from Bude, Leopallooza has been going for around 5 years now and it just keeps getting better. Eliza Doolittle headlined on the Sunday this year, but we also rated Man Like Me and of course our favourite local band The Sum Of. It’s always good to head to a festival where you recognise or know nearly everyone there – much more of a sociable experience! Ollie and I parked our vans (and families) up together with a few friends and chilled out in the sun (and the occasional splash of August rain of course) all weekend. Great bands, great friends, great burritos (cheers Jules!).

So the shops gone!

So after 20 years of serving the surfers of Surrey and the surrounding area at the beggining of April Hi-life finally locked the doors of the shop for the last time.  After seeing most of his cutomers grow up through his years in the shop, Dave is now enjoying his retiremant and spending most of his days on the beach.

Although the shop has closed, like a phoenix Hilifesurf has risen from the ashes.  After living in Cornwall for the past 11years i couldn't face the move back up country and leave the waves behind, so Hilifesurf lives on but is now based in Bude.

We are opening an online surf store that will be stocking all the best brands available(in our eyes).  Everything we will be stocking is used by one of our team so we can be sure that all stock is up to scratch.  We are in the last few stages before going online and we will let you know the date that we will be up and running soon.

We have lots of stock arriving daily and will be offering lots of opening discounts, so keep your eyes peeled.

We are also tweeting a daily surf forecast for Widemouth Bay, North Cornwall here.

So I'm new to this blogging thing, but I thought what the hell - I might as well give it a go...
It's been a busy winter for us, with lots of projects on the go. With no time for a holiday, the short days and long evenings have definitely started to drag - but spring is now around the corner and it reared its head on Sunday, albeit for a brief moment. The end of winter is finally in sight and it's time to look forward to the spring swells!

A kind of a holiday though this weekend - I'm having a brief dash away from the coast and heading up to Bristol to see Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip play at the 02 Academy. The last time I saw them was at Bestival a few years ago and I can't wait to see them again. I'm looking forward to seeing the new tracks live and compare them to the greatness of the first album, 'Angles'. If you haven't heard them check them out here: http://www.myspace.com/lesacvspip

It's gonna be nice to get back to a city for a few days as well; it's a good chance to wander round the shops, check out the works of Banksy and pick up some new records as well as spending some time with my fiancee Kate.

Anyway - lots of exiting things coming up over the next month and I'll try and keep everyone up to date here. Watch this space...
